I always monkey with my chains by adding or subtracting links and never use those goofy 'quickie links' or whatever they are called. I have never had a problem. I use SRAM 8 speed chains or KMC brand. I figure having a chain tool and being able to add or subtract a link is part of the deal in the event your chain snaps or whatever.
