I agree that the flexiness is more in the aluminum stem than inherent
in the 1" quill design. My B'stone mountain bike uses a steel quill
stem, and it feels as solid up front as my 9/8" steerer Surly, also
with a steel stem. My Riv has an aluminum Nitto stem, and even though
it isn't raised very high it's still flexier than either of the bikes
with steel stems. Not bad- or dangerous-feeling at all, just flexier.
