The struts are solid aluminum.  (And as Mark at RBW once chuckled, "yeah,
we've got some extras in stock if you cut them too short...")

That's the tool I used to shorten mine.  My plan was to use it to score a
cut line and then use my Dremel, but after the first spin, I realized it was
doing just fine on its own.  I had been a little concerned about getting the
cut square with the Dremel, anyway. (And my hacksaw blade was in poor shape,
and it was late in the evening.)

The only thing was that the cutter peened up a small shoulder, which had to
be removed (dremel) before the strut would fit through the opening in the
fitting.
