Jack Browns are a dream. Maybe think of the blues if you want to do some mixed terrain stuff and worry less about flats. They are great on the road. On a Hilsen, it might be fun to roll with Pasela 37s.
As has been written, you'll keep up with your friends on carbon bikes if you're a stronger rider than they are. If not, then they can wait. If your equal, then you might be a bit behind - a couple of extra pounds can't mean much -- but your bike will outlast theirs 5 fold...and you can smirk at them when you take the little singletrack along the road...
