Utter simplicity is simply keeping the crank you have , I assume you have an XD w/24/36/4x ? You don't have to remove the outer ring unless you want to replace it with a chainguard . Set you FD to not shift into the big ring if you like.
A VBC crank requires special chainrings only available thru White, this to me sounds like more complication.
