I ride the Large on my Hunqapillar and load it up with tent, sleeping bag, 
stove, and sleeping pad strapped on top. I ride with constant vertigo, so 
balance is a big issue for me and I have no problems with that setup -- and 
that's riding single track technical trails. The only reason I'd go with a 
Medium is if I didn't want a rack on my bike (I may consider that set up 
for a light weight bikepacking setup). As others have said, the Large does 
not touch the thigh, but the medium would unless you don't strap it to the 
seat post.
