More expensive but more elegant too.  I've used one with  a hose clamp and 
plastic cover which was cheap enough and worked OK. 

I find, especially with triples, that sooner or later something comes out 
of alignment and the chain either falls over the outside edge or slides 
past the little ring.  When I started riding all decent outside rings came 
with a post that mounted inside the crank arm to prevent this, and if the 
chain meant over you could usually lift it back with the derailler.  I see 
RBW now offers big rings with this.  I don't know why chain catchers aren't 
used more, they really do solve the inside over shift problem.
