The riders got to Klamath Falls via Amtrak. How did they get back from the Deschutes? For me, I'd be taking the train both ways, so as relaxing as the train is (very), it's going to be just as relaxing in the other direction. OTOH, if I was taking the train to or from the Deschutes, the nearest station would be Portland. If I remember correctly, the ferocious wind blows up the Gorge, so starting from Portland, riding to the start of the Oregon Outback and then riding the route south would make more sense to me.
