Though this won't answer your question directly but in three months the North American Handmade Bicycle Show is being held in Louisville, Kentucky. Yes it is a far way from your state but you can meet more builders, in one day than you can in a month in California.
I go every year just to enjoy the bikes and atmosphere. It is a fun filled weekend. Where else can you meet, Bruce Gordon, Steve Potts, Richard Sachs, Chris King, Joe Bell and a slew of others all in one weekend? One of the bike builders that I think does a nice Rohloff is Co-Motion, have a look at their Americano.
