I test rode a Sam at the Hatchet shop last year, great experience, 
extremely neutral ride.  If I was blindfolded (and somehow managed to stay 
upright) I'd be unable to tell the difference from a Homer/Saluki similarly 
equipped.

On the weight limits... I'm also 250 lbs and did a 3 day GAP trip with an 
additional 20ish lbs, maybe a bit more depending on water with no problems 
whatsoever.  Who know's over a long period of time or even rougher terrain 
but I have never felt like the Saluki (Homer) was underbuilt for my size. 
 Cushy tires, and riding 'smart' to avoid or cushion big blow's obviously 
also helps.
