I've never really figured this out well enough to have a strong opinion about it, and I think about it *all the time*. I do prefer short chainstays on really technical descents and on slow, rocky trails, for the way they allow me to get my weight back over the rear wheel and un-weight the front. Ever since Chris Chance came along (the first time), it's definitely become popularly accepted wisdom that shorter is better. But, in addition to Grant and Rivendell's thoughts on the matter, here are some musings that I've found interesting over the past few years:
Vassago's explanation of their long-chainstay "wet cat geometry": http://www.vassagocycles.com/wetcat-geometry/ Jeff Jones' early thoughts and inspiration behind what recently became his new "plus" model: http://blog.jonesbikes.com/the-long-ranger/ Plus, the presence of a unique and "different" feature is usually the best way to justify having yet another bike. I'm setting mine up as a mountain bike! On Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 5:30:43 PM UTC-6, Kieran J wrote: > I'm not sure the super-duper-long chainstays would do well on MTB > material.
