I've long since given up anything except regular underwear and street shorts
or (street) knickers for riding up to 30 miles, and I ride fixed so I can't
stand up as one can on a coaster. I'd probably use one of the few pairs of
cycling shorts I have left for longer rides, but I find that well fitting
(not tight in the crotch) street pants work well.

This is on Flites, with lowish (2" below) bars, and I use the hooks quite a
bit. I really think that a good saddle position is 3/4 of saddle comfort, as
well as 4/5 of arm and hand comfort (I don't wear gloves, either, even on
the Motobecane Gr Record with cush-less cheap tape).
