I rode down Haleakala with a friend last year before surgery. If you do a paid tour you'll not be taken the top of mountain as the park service doesn't allow it. If you have a friend drive you to the top you can go all the way down.

It was really cold at the top, not so much a couple of thousand feet down. The ride is great...30 mile downhill (okay, one section of about 100 yards of uphill at one point, but it's very far down).
