So something went wrong with your drive train, and it is still wrong. 9 speed Shimano bar end shifting, in my experience of many tens of thousands of miles, is never "finicky" unless something is failing. One suspect is a fraying shift cable. Usually this happens right at the shift lever so a broken strand pokes your finger and gives you early warning of impending failure, but it's not the only possibility.
