David, I had lumbar surgery back in 2005. Titanuim rods, screws and cages.Your 
Xray brought it all back. It took me a full year to get back to riding, so 
you're doing well to be riding after 6 months. I normally ride between 6-8,000 
miles a year now, and my back isn't an issue at all when riding. I use drop 
bars and my seat is level with the bars.

I agree that back surgery should only be a last resort, and yes the first 3 
months were hell, but the painkillers certainly took the edge off.
