I believe my '72 Sports Tourer has 14-34 freewheel and 54-40 rings. Each gear seems to be the right space from the last one. It feels just right. Chromed steel twin-stik shifters on the headset, 700x35 tires, centerpull brakes. Riding it makes me happy. My experience would not improve if a cassette replaced the freewheel.
