Not short, not free (that I know of), but definitely Riv: "Remembrance of Things Past" by Marcel Proust. No particular end goal to the novel, you can't get to the finish line in a hurry, it's endlessly lovely, and there's no way to tackle it except in a leisurely, winding way. Kevin
