I use Sturmey-Archer's S3X hub, which has a reasonably wide range, coupled with 
a spin-on singlespeed freewheel to allow coasting. The top gear (3rd) is direct 
drive (the most efficient on any IGH), and the bottom gear (1st) is about 60% 
of top. With a 72-inch top gear, that puts the lowest gear at about 43 inches, 
which is low enough for me for all but the steepest pitches.
