+1 on Empire Canvas mitts (although I don't own them... yet). I have nice Black Diamond mitts for extreme cold. Nothing beats mitts for warmth, but I generally prefer a greater degree of dexterity than mitts will afford. Hestra Guide Gloves are my glove of choice. They feature removable wool inserts and are built to last.
