I get the whimsy and anti-derailer-snobbery that GP sees in the Altus, but I don't think I could bring myself to put one on a nice bike like your Sam. It makes more sense to me on the complete CLEM builds, which are intended to be a budget entry into Rivbikes. My thinking there is that you would gradually up-spec the bike as parts wear out or - as in your case - get jammed up. Shimano XTs are fabulous mechs.
