I replaced the vintage Ultegra brifters with the Audax shifters on our 
tandem a few years ago. I wasn't able to use bar-end shifters because we 
already had a lever for the drum brake in the end of the bar. The shifters 
work perfect in friction mode on the 3x8 derailleurs.

The shifters are in front of the brake levers, so you don't even know they 
are there until you reach for them to shift.
