A common assumption is that companies pull out of markets because they have 
failed.  Even large companies such as Bridgestone have limits to their 
resources.  It's entirely possible that the US bicycle business was simply 
not their best use of resources.  I have no direct knowledge but it's one 
possible explanation.  Pretty academic at this point.

To the point of this thread, Jeff Jones presents a compelling case for his 
thinking.  Now that there are some LWB Rivendells out there we'll anxiously 
await to hear how they handle off-road.  Of course, the Jones videos look 
like a lot more aggressive type of riding.  Maybe Jay Ritchey can be 
enticed to test & offer his comments on the Appaloosa.
