John, you don't have to do nuthin' you don't want to... ;^) Here's the thing - There's different levels of "waxed" in canvas - the Keven's bag was particularly "dry" to my sense. New on the rack, a Filson field jacket has definitely got more inherent wax than the fabric they use on the bags. Also, I'm innately distrustful of sewn seams. I also know that my riding (California, SF Bay Area) tends to have both rainy seasons and dry, dusty conditions. If I only rode roads, it probably wouldn't be as great an issue, but with on and off trails, my Banana Bag had gotten pretty grody, and the trail dust got worked pretty deep into the fabric. So, when I got the Country Bag, and was looking at a serious rain forecast for the upcoming brevet I planned to use it for, I figured, hey, the Filson wax has always worked well on the Filson jackets... Also, I figured that since at some point, I'd probably have to _re_ treat the bag, it would be better to start by treating it.
