Apparantly there can be all kinda reasons why a prop gets into the picture in show biz. Sometimes arbitrary, sometimes not.
Back in the late '60's there was a group called the Peppermint Rainbow. One of the singers told me that they were on a CBS TV show doing their song "Will You be Staying After Sunday?". They were using all Fender instruments even though in real life some of them played other instruments.
