Dear Julian, A tone deaf rider for sure. A response like, "Well, the proof of the bike is in the riding," and a pointed change of topic would be my strategy. Or a change of position in the double paceline might be in order. A gentle roll off the front sounds like your response. I am just not that fast/competitive these days.
I get a very few comments on the club runs like yours, but if they continue with the distance events, then they will figure it out. I ordinarily will point positive, and answer questions straight. Sometimes the interlocutor is just expressing ignorance and curiosity.
