Jim, I saw more bikes than motor vehicles (Sattler was busy with cars, but River Road was lean). Kind of a side trip, I crossed over the Ponderosa bridge and doubled back to check the river at the spot we'll be releasing trout tomorrow. With friends, have also stretched the ride to Gruene, which makes a great lunch and brew stop.
I've been fishing the Guadalupe tailwater since before 1980, and on the GRTU board since 1995 or so (and did 5 years as Chapter Affairs, which was hectic - everything about the meetings). When Karen took up the TIC program, I helped her set up the first tank. I kept my distance with other activities, but when she couldn't do it any more, she volunteered me, and I took it. It was 4 schools then, and now it's 12. >From early time on the river, I saw that the feeling of ownership for the tailwater was from far away, and the people who lived on the river were not particularly kind to it. So the goal for me has always been to raise a generation on the river who will take ownership. We have tanks in New Braunfels (the kids above) and even in the elementary school in the horseshoe bend on the river - plus San Antonio, Boerne, Round Rock, Houston/Katy - and as far away as Longview. I can't take credit for it, because the Houston FFF chapter does all the footwork for there. Busy day tomorrow, we're doing this again with the San Antonio and Houston schools, and I'll make at least one more trip this month (our TPWD release permit is only good for this month). But more than this, GRTU fought for a legal "share" of the water district, and this year, renewed that out of court extended for more than 10 years. For a decade now, we're closely allied with the livery organization, WORD, and everyone on the river now recognizes the benefit of the fishery, not only for the winter economy it provides, but the guarantees it provides for the summer economy. We've come a long way since my "early" observation. We fund R&D at Texas State for the tailwater and the watershed. Of course we're busy at river cleanup, work with landowners on riparian banks, and just a few years ago (took us that long to get a permit) began moving aquatic vegetation back into the tailrace after the scouring of the 2002 flood. BTW, do you eat at the BBQ stand at Sattler? They have the best chopped beef sandwich in the state - they use the good stuff, the burned ends. That's where we're meeting up tomorrow. (The Front Porch is also a good restaurant and Old Sattler Baking Company is ta-ta, very good - great breakfast) <http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/estes/campout/aP3110034.jpg> <http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/estes/campout/aP3110046.jpg> We've had some good spring and fall campouts at L&L, and basically lived on our bikes while we there <http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/decoy/fish9/aP1010004.jpg> <http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/decoy/fish7/aP2190008.jpg> and of course in the river, to On Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:11:37 PM UTC-5, Jim Bronson wrote: > > River Road is great on a weekday.
