Over the last several years I've played with a lot of different shiftlever
positions. I like downtube shifters a lot. I like barcon shifters in some
situations. I like thumbshifters, including upside down thumbshifters, and
I also like stem shifters. Riv-content: I bought a lot of the parts to
experiment with these different locations from Rivendell, and I also felt
encouraged by Rivendell to do my own thing, even if others think it's
weird.

I've been working on a new decidedly un-Rivish bike build. The Rivish part
is that it's a 650B road bike for adventure touring. The un-Rivish part is
that it's an aluminum frame, with a full carbon fork, through axles and
hydraulic disc brakes. I knew I didn't want to run brifters because I
didn't want to run 11sp, and the bike won't take downtube shifters. I
considered FOUR shifter options:

1. 10sp indexed barcons
2. 10sp indexed DT shifters on Kelly Take-offs
3. Thumbies on the tops
4. DIY stem shifters

I initially thought I'd go with barcons to start. It's the conventional
choice, and I could always switch to something else if I wanted to. I
stared and dwelled on it for a while, and decided to take the least
conventional route and made my own stem shifters. I took the clamp part of
a Problem Solvers downtube shifter clamp, and the cable stop part of sun
race thumbies to make my own 1-1/8" threadless steerer mount to fit Shimano
10 speed barcon shifters. There are lots of photos on my Flickr of the
process (and the Riv-objectionable bike), but here is a summary list:

It's not impossible that I'll switch to another shifter concept at a later
time, but I'm going to give these a fair shot.
