Hi Michael, I'll admit I'm not that picky about my tape being in perfect condition. I do take a lot of care in wrapping and finishing the ends, though. Also, the Salsa "Thick n Zesty" probably covered half that distance--remarkably durable! I switched to cork just a few thousand miles ago for a change. All of the brake pad wear happens in winter. They're consistently gone by April.
Sellwood Cycle Repair is my neighborhood LBS and highly recommended by me. They ship bikes regularly, and I regularly see tandems in the shop for repair, though they don't sell them new.
