I use an equestrian helmet. They are good looking, have a small visor 
(about an inch) so rain is deflected, and are built to stronger standards 
(horses are higher from the ground and have hooves) than typical bicycle 
stock. The trick is to find one large enough, the horsey set tends to be 
female, and one with good ventilation. My current helmet is a large Troxel 
school model (cost = $35 and built like a tank). My next will be a L/XL 
Ovation Protege (cost = $45). I'll get the Ovation b/c the ventilation is 
better and the interior suspension is more tunable. In either brand, the 
liner removes for washing. Removeable liners are a a nice feature. 

I do not particularly like bicycle helmets (I have a $200 Giro). Too much 
slipstream fru-fru. Reminds me of the lycra folks.
