Yesterday afternoon while out for a short but pleasant ride on the Saluki,
about 10 miles around a loop and five miles from home, I suddenly became
aware of a slight bumping sensation, which I surmised was coming from my
front tire. I couldn't see anything wrong with it but rode the last 5
miles very cautiously. At home I found a bump right across the tread. The
tire is a nearly new Pari-Moto. I removed the tire and on the inside
discovered an inch long slit in the casing.

Unfortunately, I bought the tire early last Summer, then decided to
experiment with the Fatty Bumpkins which came on Pat's Betty but didn't
actually fit very well. Recently I realized I wasn't riding the Saluki
much and suspected it was the tires which were leading me to avoid it.
About two weeks ago I put the new Pari-Motos on and fell in love with the
bike again.

So, bottom line, even if I was certain this was a mfg. defect it would be
hard to make a claim now. I tried putting three rolls of electrical tape
across the slit but the bubble returned.

I cant think of any way the inside of the casing could have failed with out
anything coming through the tire. The only other hypothesis I might have
is that in order to seat the tire properly I had blown it up to 85, which
is 10 more than the recommended max. After the I was sure the bead was on
straight, I let some air out but don't own a gage and so didn't recheck the
pressure. Still it seems pretty remote that I could have damaged it.
