Funny that those are available many places for less than $3.  

Took my 8 speed lever apart far enough to see that the corresponding ring 
is fine.  The mating bits appear to be pressed together with the lever 
itself in the assembly.  My curiousity did not extend to prying this 
apart.  No loose bits of plastic or metal dropped out.  Everything was 
clean & not gunked up.  I just reassembled as-is & everything functions 
properly (not always a given when I start playing around).  I'll take it 
out tomorrow to see how the indexing does under load.
