Ordinarily, I'd agree.  In the case of Rivendell however, I've learned that 
the things that are out-of-stock are usually going to be back in-stock 
quite quickly, if you are patient.    They seem to stock what they can 
afford to purchase and keep in inventory, but are committed to the validity 
and value of the products that they carry.   Most on-line bike shops stock 
and sell whatever they can get in bulk and for the best bargain at the time 
and, when it's gone, it's either gone for good or it takes a long, long 
time to re-stock.    

In my case, I can't think of many things that Riv sells that represent such 
an immediate "need" that I can't wait a bit.   The thing I do get 
frustrated with is that I'll often put off placing an order to wait for one 
item to come back in-stock, only for one of the other items I was going to 
order to go out-of-stock.   It would be nice to have the option to 
backorder out-of-stock items and have the whole order ship later, in order 
to minimize shipping costs.
