Tim, I run 38mm Barlow's Pass with longboards and for the sake of fender coverage, I wouldn't go wider. Fenders do their job best with some extra width. P50s would be a better match for a tire beyond 38mm.
Regarding the max with no fenders, I wouldn't go beyond 45mm. I ran Smart Sams last summer and it was a tight fit.
