Joe, funny how both ways work, I've never had an issue running 8 speed 
chains on 9 speed FD's, and you have, seems like a per bike basis.  The 
extra long stays may have something to do with it too, a little more 
lateral flex than the same bike with say, shorter stays.  Doesn't matter 
though .. . . I have always found that every bike is unique anyways, even 
parts that work for one bike may not work well on another. That said 
though, I don't use any of the later Shimano Fd's , all mine are 
specifically chosen for a straight as cage as possible, even the triple mtb 
models I have which are 80-90's era. 

    Jack would do well with a new-new old stock 9 speed FD.
