Seems to be a desirable bag - if it were mine, and I didn't have a sentimental attachment to it, I'd look for an alternative use for it or sell/trade it and replace with a bag that works better in that space. I'd try to avoid surgery, even without a sentimental attachment - it might be under-engineered, but it appears beautifully crafted.
