I know nothing about these bikes, but based on the article you linked it seems to me that the issue is more closely related to the low spoke count of the wheels than the disc brakes.
So the question is: why would Trek manufacture a "touring bike" with 24-spoke wheels? Am I missing something or does this make next to zero sense on their part?
