If you go back and look at the original pics that Leah posted, you can see brake wear at the spokes and see the eyelets pulling away from the rim. I don't know how much wear that rim has but if the sidewalls are worn enough to cause the sidewalls to bulge at the spoke holes then it's a pretty well worn rim.
If the spokes bulging and the eyelets pulling are an indication of too much tension or a defective rim then a message to the manufacturer might be in order. Rims are consumable and it's possible it lived a useful life. Several years of hard braking on downhills seems pretty reasonable. If it was a new wheel and this happened in the first year of use then that would seem premature. Using a bike for everyday transportation assumes some level of maintenance and replacement of consumables.
