I've got the Yakima Two Timer <https://www.yakima.com/twotimer> on the back for two bikes - works great with a wide variety of bikes, downtubes, heights, fenders, tire width, wheel size, etc.... I've got the Yakima Raptoraero <https://www.yakima.com/raptoraero> on the roof which works with a pretty wide range of bikes, too... also doesn't mind fenders, no break down of bike needed, etc...
If I need more than three bikes, I have put a folding trailabike and folding Dahon in the back. I don't like the feel of driving most cars with four bikes hanging off the back, but some cars are better than others.
