The young guy on the carbon fiber bike was probably going 3-4 mph faster than my 9 mph average, which after 15 minutes would put him a close to a mile ahead.
Since Sunday's ride I've rediscovered the pains that come from being out of hill shape, notably pain my my lower back from all the standing and straining, and very painful quads from the downhill resistance -- I've been hobble down stairs holding tight to the railings. Ibuprofen time. But when in shape I've ridden the same hill, and even the whole 5+ miles of it, in the 76" gear with surprisingly little problem (usually with some wind at my back). But pain notwithstanding, yesterday I rode the other Riv, 70" gear to the PO with wind-catching rear pannier against a 25 gusts to 37 from the NW; more comfortable than walking down stairs, that's for sure. I'll have to start riding the relatively hilly terrain across Coors boulevard more often, or ride more into Rio Rancho, up the side of the Mesa, instead of always flat rides north and south along the river.
