Re: [RBW] Will riding a Rivendell make me self-conscious or overly worrisome?

I have to agree with Jim and others who have replied: it's made to be
ridden, and the first scratch plus some dirt will help you relax about
it. One of the wonderful things about being able to buy a nice bike
(or camera, guitar, sewing machine, whatever) is that it's a joy to
use. Rivendells are beautiful, but they're meant to be ridden, and
there's no better way to show it love than to put a crapload of miles
on it.

My favorite pictures of Rivendells are the ones that are thoroughly
beat, with scratches and nicks and bar tape hanging off, but you can
tell that they run like clockwork, and that the owner is grinning with
every mile. One of the things that sold me on Rivendells after reading
quite a bit about them was seeing a picture of Grant's personal bike.
It was a mess, but it was leading by example; it showed that the bikes
were made by people who love to ride, and that they're functional
machines first, and that the beauty is just along for the ride.

As for theft, i've had bikes stolen from my garage twice, and my
Rivendell stays in the house now. I don't baby it (riding it for a
season of cyclocross), but i'm careful about locking it, because i
live in a place where bikes are stolen, and i don't want to lose it.
Like my Redwood, the Sam is low-profile for a Rivendell (compared to
the 2-tone paint or ornate lugs of the Wilbury, for example), and like
others said, if it's noticed at all, it'll be someone who can't
believe it's not a 30-year-old bike that you repainted. Treat it like
a nice bike; ride the crap out of it, wash it once in a while, lock it
up well.
