Thanks for all the input folks, it's given me plenty to think on. I did have a hard tail (too small) for a while and ventured out on the Austin trails, some of which are indeed a little too interesting for my taste.
The idea of a new wheelset for the Sam is a good one (cheaper than a new bike, certainly!). I have 45mm fenders on there now, so I might have to switch seasonally or something, or pick up a bigger set.
