I've ridden both and have a 2tt Sam.  The 2tt rides better weighted. The second 
top tube prevents noodly-ness especially on trails when weighted.

I think the idea was the Appaloosa could take over the need for a fully lugged 
import frame aimed at more trail worthiness.  The 1tt Sam could then retreat 
into a more parallel country bike spot alongside the Homer.

Just speculating for the most part. The 2tt makes for an excellent all rounder 
especially if you enjoy light camping trips.
