If by "lower gears" you mean the smaller cogs that are similar in size and the chain keeps catching on adjacent ones, then yes you might have an 8-speed chain. Hit the flashlight function on your phone and get a good look at the links, you should be able to find a model number with an 8 or 9 in it.
