I lost my keys on a popular stretch of dirt road, and annoyed a number of walkers asking them if they had seen my keys. No luck, alas, but I did find them inside my house when I got home, and entered using a cleverly hidden spare.
OTOH, the grocery pannier -- old hook and bungee type -- that I lost on or about the same stretch never did turn up, either on that road or at home. I assume it either bounced off, or was scraped off when I filtered through something narrow. And then there were the several fraught days when I couldn't find my cell phone; when I dialed it using Google, I could hear it ringing faintly and elusively and derisively in the distance, but when I dashed upstairs or downstairs to locate it, it eluded me. I found it on about day 2, lying outside my front door on the gravel -- good thing we're high desert.
