The 12-36 with a long cage rear derailer is a good start. Right now you're 
running the small ring and rear cassette from a race bike, which is a total 
waste on that lovely frame. See how you're doing with the expanded 1x8-or-9, 
then you can always change the cranks and add the front derailer back later if 
you need 2 or 3 rings up front.
