The Brits back in the day felt the same way about derailleurs. I think the tech is right, modern IGHs are designed for casual users, Rohloff excepted. IGHs for racing went out in the 50s.
The great thing about the old racing IGHs was you could fix them yourself. Have you had problems with the Sunrace AW hubs ? It'll be interesting to see how the S3X hubs hold up, maybe try one of those with a freewheel for your exuberant customer ?
