I have a stash off Ibex Duo wool/poly panel shorts  that I cut the pads out
from. Find them on Ebay.  I have a Kucharik pair bought new without a pad. Also
have icebreaker bibs with a pad. My favorites are Smartwool Rambition shorts
though, from which I've also cut the pads out. Just a little elastic mixed in
with the wool.  Under padless shorts, I wear wicking sports briefs in hot
weather and wool boxers in cold weather. The Kuchharik kind of sags when wet,
which I'm not wild about. The Ibex is comfy but needs a wash with every use.
The all wool Smartwool and Kucharik do not.  If I'm a little saddle tender
after a long ride, I'll use the padded Icebreakers with Bag Balm as the skin
glide.

and, for that matter, in boxers and cut off khakis.
I gave up lycra shorts largely for reasons of comfort, not appearance -- I
hated the bulky, awkward diapers, the tight clingy fit, and the clamminess when
you cool down. Worse, for me, than synthetic jerseys.
