For adventuring in the North end of NorCal it's worth tracking down Chuck "Bodfish" Elliot's books. He runs a small shop in Quincy worth visiting, and some of the maps from his books are available on his website: http://www.bodfishbicycles.com/#projects. I used to live up in that direction and there's a lot of amazing roads to ride.
