Segueing from another thread where many respondents urged "plus" over regular 29er tires: I've got my own twist to the question. I'm thinking of 700C X 60 compared to 650B X 75 or so.
For mixed pavement and non-technical but sandy terrain, what would "plus" size tires add to 60 mm tires? My concerns are principally sand flotation and bump cushioning, not traction on steep, technical trails. 1/3 to 1/2 of my riding on this bike (Matthews) is on pavement, and I am very particular about pavement rolling quality, so much so that I happily give up some sand flotation and dirt road cushioning for good pavement rolling. And the Big Ones, tubeless, are very, very good on pavement at my preferred compromise pressure range of 18-20 psi. And the Big Ones at true 60 mm are noticeably better on our sand than the 50 mm Furious Freds they replaced. (I can negotiate patches up to 3" deep, but most of my routes -- this is summer, dry -- are 1" to 2" deep.) So, since 2.8s or 3s would undoubtedly be better in sand and on rough dirt, I guess the question comes down to: how well or badly would "650B X 75 mm tires roll on pavement, compared to (again, wonderful) 60 mm Big Ones on pavement? In particular -- since you'd run 75s quite a bit lower than 60s -- how might the sidewall flop of 650B plus tires at 15 psi compare to that of 60s at 20, on pavement? 60s at 20 do flop, but, to me, acceptably, given my need for sand flotation and dirt road cushioning; a better dirt-only pressure would be say 16-17 psi, while the lowest pressure to avoid sidewall flop on pavement is circa 25 psi. But I choose what, for me, is the best compromise. -- *------------------------------------------------------------------------------------* *Still 'round the corner there may waitA new road or a secret gate,And though we pass them by today,Tomorrow we may come this wayAnd take the hidden paths that runTowards the Moon or to the Sun.* --- J.R.R.
