Garmin Etrex has been the most popular GPS device for bikepacking and touring. It takes AA batteries so you can easily carry extra and buy replacements at any convenience store. It will also run off an external usb battery, or you can use rechargeable batteries. Open street maps are free and have remarkable detail, and you can preload routes.
